Tennessee Tech has begun taking steps to ensure student safety from the coronavirus.
Chief Communications Officer Karen Lykins said officials are closely utilizing CDC guidelines to keep the community and students informed.
“Due to the continued national and international concerns, we wanted to make sure our campus knows that we continue to talk with the Center of Disease Control, the Tennessee Department of Health, and the Upper Cumberland Regional Health Department to monitor what’s going on. That’s the most important way to stay informed, and to make sure that our efforts are coordinated,” Lykins said.
Tech has no reports of the virus at this time, Lykins added. Tech created a page with updated CDC information about the virus, as well as international traveling advice.
Lykins said Tech plans to closely monitor students studying abroad. Some colleges across the nation have suspended or consider delaying foreign campus activity. Late last month the University of Tennessee cancelled all spring semester study abroad programs to China.
“We care for all of our students, we want to make sure that their well being and their health is the very first and foremost concern,” Lykins said. “We’re going to stay in touch with everyone that has a part in that story line to make sure that every student has the best possible information and advice about staying healthy and staying safe.”
Washing hands, using hand sanitizer, and avoiding touching your eyes and mouth when you’re sick are some of the best ways to reduce chances of getting sick. Lykins added staying home when you’re feeling sick is also important.
