T-DOT officials said the Jefferson Avenue widening project in Cookeville is still on track to be completed by the fall.
T-DOT Cumberland Plateau Regional Communications Officer Rae-Ann Bradley said the contractor is currently constructing a box culvert on the south portion of Jefferson Avenue. Bradley said once that phase is completed the contractor will focus on the area towards I-40.
“Some other upcoming major work items also include starting on the widening and reconstruction of the Interstate 40 East ramps on the North end of the project,” Bradley said. “Another note here, this work will be saved so that the ramps will remain open while construction activities take place.”
Bradley said as weather permits the contractor will also pave the newly constructed roadway alignment to keep the road open. Bradley said the paving will allow for construction to continue in areas where traffic exists.
“Regardless of the work happening out there I just want to mention that the contractor will keep one lane open in each direction at all times,” Bradley said. “So we just don’t want to disrupt traffic flow through there as much as possible.”
Bradley said TDOT has closely monitored the recent inclement weather. Bradley said even if the weather does cause some delays the project is still expected to be completed by the Fall of 2025.
“That’s where we work hand in hand with our contractor to make sure there is an open line of communication,” Bradley said. “So that as things change or develop in the field we are able to work with them to mitigate risks and improve the safety and operation of the roadway or interchange that we are currently working to improve.”
