TDEC, TDOT Starting Work On Overpass To Protect Great Falls Cotton Mill

TDEC and TDOT conducting a joint project to construct a highway bypass to better protect the Great Falls Cotton Mill at Rock Island State Park.

Parks Area Manager Kenny Gragg said the bypass would lead traffic away from the historic building which sits just inches away from the road.

“So that mill is taking the brunt of water splash, dust and debris,” Gragg said. “Everything is hitting that mill and is slowly wearing away at its foundation. So this would provide a layer of protection at the mill.”

Gragg said the project will relieve congestion as well as improve safety for pedestrians. After completion, park visitors will access the mill area by a designated park access road.

Gragg said additional parking will also be installed. Gragg said clearing for the project will begin this month with an estimated 12-18 month completion.

Gragg said the Collins River Trail will have periods of closure as well as potential reroutes during construction.
