The TBI investigating the killing of a Clarkrange man by Fentress County Sheriffs deputies Saturday night.
Just before 7:00pm, sheriffs deputies arrived in the 100 block of Lewis Road following reports that a man had a knife, hatchet and pipe. Dispatch reports said the man was threatening to harm himself and others. Deputies found 37-year Gregory Lee Turnure in the roadway upon arrival.
According to the TBI, deputies ordered the man to drop his weapons. Turnure refused and would not obey verbal commands. A deputy deployed a taser. It was not effective. At one point, Turnure attempted to strike a deputy with what appeared to be a pipe. A deputy fired on Turnure. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
Eighth District Attorney General Jared Effler asked the TBI to investigate the circumstances of the incident.
The name of the deputy involved was not released by the TBI.
