The Better Business Bureau warning of a new scam targeting senior citizens.
The latest scam comes to victims by mail, asking for donations and responses to surveys concerning social security issues.
Marty Donnelly serves as the Regional Manager of the BBB.
“We did the investigation and we found out that these firms were lobby groups, who focus on influencing legislative decisions,” Donnelly said. “Donations to these groups are not tax deductible and they aren’t charitable organizations. A lot of people will get these and think it’s a charitable organization, but it isn’t.”
The organizations sending the mailers include The Senior Citizens Alliance, The Seniors Center, and The Seniors Trust.
Donnelly said folks can call their congressional representatives to find out information about legislative issues.
You can also avoid becoming a victim to the scam by removing your name from a mailing list. Residents can do that by calling 212-768-7277 or by visiting https://dmachoice.thedma.org/
