Supply Chain Issues Creating More Costs For Byrdstown Water System

Byrdstown has been utilizing emergency generators to provide water for at least a month as the city waits for a new pump.

The city ordered new equipment for its pump station at the Pickett County garage facility over a year ago. Mayor Sam Gibson said the situation has caused a need to reevaluate how the city manages its water system.

“We’ve been running a rented generator for five to six weeks and probably when we pay the rent on that, that’s probably be the expense of another pump,” Gibson said. “We’ve got to sit back and look at our procedures.”

Gibson said the overall cost will likely exceed $20,000. Gibson said the issue was not caused by negligence by the Board of Aldermen. Gibson said the gear was ordered on time, but supply chain delays affected the repair plan.

Gibson said he wants to focus on gaining backup equipment moving forward to prepare for situations like this.
