With the official start to summer this weekend, many people will be enjoying themselves outside. A local dermatologist said a little preparation can prevent sunburn disaster.
Dr. Lisa Whiteaker said covering up and wearing sunscreen can help prevent the burn.
“Sunscreen is a valuable tool to protect against ultraviolet damage but I tell my patients it doesn’t make you bulletproof. You can overcome the ability of a sunscreen to protect you very easily if you’re on the lake, or sweating, or in and out of a pool,” Whiteaker said.
Follow the directions on the bottle to make sure you get the maximum effect from your sunscreen, she said.
“Sunscreen is valuable and what I tell my patients to look for is an SPF 30-45, it must contain zinc oxide in my opinion, zinc oxide is a physical blocker,” Whiteaker said.
She also recommends wearing light, breathable clothing that covers as much skin as possible.
