White County High School students collecting donations to provide disaster relief for East Tennessee residents dealing with flooding.
White County High School Principal Greg Wilson said students brought forth the idea to collect donations. White County High School Junior Isabella Sackett said she got the inspiration to start the drive from a discussion during an FFA meeting where many students felt sympathy for those suffering.
“We just kind of talked about how there’s nowhere near here to drop things off or just an easier way to help,” Sackett said. “So we were just kind of like hey how about we do something in the shop and that was just kind of how it came about.”
Sackett said the school is looking for food, bottled water, flashlights, toiletries, and hygiene products. Wilson said not every day do you see students take initiative like how White County High School students have.
“For our kids to step up and take on a project like this as a principal it makes me very proud of our kids and our teachers getting behind it,” Wilson said. “Makes me very proud of my teachers and staff as well.”
Sackett said teachers have been very helpful with laying the groundwork for the drive. Sackett said it has been encouraging to see other students participate to help out.
“Everybody is definitely contributing just because I think that they know what they are doing is going to a good cause,” Sackett said. “The damage has been all over social media which a lot of students use so they have seen the damage. There have been a lot of students interested in helping.”
Sackett said even people who do not have ties to the school are welcome to donate to the school’s drive. The drop-off location is at the school’s CTE building. The drive will run through till October 25th.
