Student Removed For Using Threatening Language

A Warren County Elementary School Student was removed from class for using threatening language Thursday.

Warren County Director of Schools Grant Swallows said the school system has been advised to not discuss details about the incident as it is under investigation by local law enforcement. Swallows said threatening language has become more prevalent nowadays and that the school system needed to take action.

“Over the last few years, our state has taken action to make that illegal and so anytime we find something of that sort we obviously take it very seriously,” Swallows said. “We have to take it very seriously in order to make sure that our students and our schools stay safe.”

Swallows said the school system will consider further action as the investigation unfolds. Swallows said removing the student from the classroom was the best form of action.

“Certainly in situations like this, you have to weigh all of the things that go through,” Swallows said. “I think in these situations you have to make the right decision for all involved in order to make sure that we maintain a safe school environment so sometimes that is necessary and there are other times when it might not be necessary but those are on case by case basis.”

Swallows said he hopes parents will have conversations about the severity and dangers of using threatening language.

“We all get frustrated, we all get in situations where we potentially are upset but it is never okay to use threatening language in any sense,” Swallows said. “There’s a correct way to handle situations. We have adults all over the county as far as teachers go and educators go that can handle situations like this. We want students to reach out and we’ll try to resolve those the best we can.”

Swallows said the school system has received a lot of resources from the state to handle these kinds of incidents and is thankful to have those available. Swallows said this is not the first time a threat has been made and unfortunately it probably won’t be the last.
