Stricter Guidelines a Success For Cookeville Football

Cookeville High School saw improvements at Thursday night’s game after implementing stricter COVID guidelines for fans.

Principal Max Petett said the student section, which was the highest point of concern, socially distanced and wore masks the entire game.

“We had faculty and administration in the stands just kind of keeping an eye on them and encouraging the kids to continue to follow those guidelines throughout the ball game,” Petett said. “And, they responded very well.”

Petett said the school did not notice in major issues during the game. Schools staff was also present outside of the student section to monitor other fans.

“We had great participation out of our fans in terms of wearing a mask,” Petett said. “Family groups sat together. Outside of that, there was good social distancing. We limited the tickets to 50 percent from what we did the previous week, so there was plenty of room at Tucker Stadium.”

Tickets sold out for the game against Livingston Academy. Petett said the school had to unfortunately turn away some fans.

“Just by the nature of our circumstances,” Petett said. “It required us to shut the gates and limit the attendance.”

Cookeville defeated Livingston Academy 33-18.
