It is Strawberry Season and Upper Cumberland farms are seeing the arrival of the fat, rich berries.
The state had little strawberry production at the beginning of the 2000s, but that has changed in recent years. Harley Sherrell owns a farm in Baxter.
“The process ain’t too awful hard,” Sherrell said. “You really just have to get your ground good and worked up and get your strawberries planted out in your rows and lay some black paper or plastic down with your strawberries and straw, and that really helps them seem to grow and just make sure they got plenty of water.”
Sherrell said the season usually lasts from April to June, but can sometimes run longer depending on weather conditions. He said local Farmers Market will be fertile with berries over the next several weeks.
“They’re more, more delicious, in my opinion, and more healthy for you when they come from the Farmers Market,” Sherrell said. “They don’t have any spray or any pesticides on them.”
“Once you get your name out there and people see your product and is able to taste it, and they’ll usually come back every year for more.”
