Stowers Elected Jamestown Mayor; Package Store Referendum Passes

Harvey Stowers will serve as Jamestown’s mayor after taking 51 percent of the vote Tuesday night.

Stowers defeated challenger Ryan Smith and incumbent Lyndon Baines. Smith captured 28 percent of the vote. Baines finished third in the race with 21 percent of the vote.

Unofficial results show the package store referendum passed by two votes in Jamestown with 335 votes for the issue and 333 against.

Five will serve on the Jamestown Board of Aldermen led by James Red Bowden, the top vote getter. Bowden received 18 percent of the vote. Bowden was appointed to the Board of Aldermen to fill a vacant seat this spring.

Kaye Bridges will join the board as a new member with 16.8 percent of the vote. Incumbents Becky Duncan, Charles Cooper and Jeni Ledbetter also won.

Julie Matthews was re-elected to serve as a Fentress County Commissioner, taking 63 percent of the vote.
