State Waiting For Grant Funding To Start UC Veterans Cemetery Project

The Upper Cumberland Veterans Cemetery project on hold as the state Veterans Office waits for federal funding.

Public Information Officer David Solon said the department is eligible for Veterans Affair grant funding. Recipients will be named in October.

“If we are to get awarded the grant and we are very optimistic that we will be, once that happens the VA will take over,” Solon said. “They really take over the design and the construction.”

Solon said an estimated completion is unknown at this time. The cemetery will take several years to complete.

The state purchased some 120 acres for the project last October along Country Club Road in White County. Solon said the state would be in charge of contracting out the design and work if awarded the funding.
