State Population Census Numbers Nearing Release

The statewide population total from the census is expected to be released to the state in the next two weeks.

That is according to House Speaker Cameron Sexton. Sexton said this number will determine any changes to districts.

“In the middle portion of the state, you’ll probably see districts maybe get a little smaller in some areas due to the growth whether you are in Rutherford County, Davidson County, Williamson County, Wilson, Sumner,” Sexton said. “If you’re in west Tennessee or northeast Tennessee, you’ll districts are going to get a little bigger, and we may have to move to to three seats from northeast and west and put them in middle Tennessee.”

Sexton said zip code and street level census data is not expected to come out until this fall. Sexton said once the redistricting process begins, there will be a chance for public input.

“We’ll have a committee,” Sexton said. “And so, the house will draw the house and the senate will draw the senate, and then, the house and senate will draw the congressional. It will all be public.”
