State Funding Rehab Project For Uffington House In Rugby

The historic Uffington House in Rugby has received $168,000 in state funding for a rehabilitation project.

Operations Manager Annie Patterson said the home was built in the 1880’s in the Rugby Village settled by Arthur Thomas Hughes. The English writer is most famous for his novel Tom Brown’s School Days.

“This house was built for his mother who moved to rural Tennessee from England when she was 83-years-old,” Patterson said. “She was the matriarch of the village. All of the important folks and big gatherings happened at the Uffington House.”

Rugby Village is located at the junction of Fentress, Morgan and Scott Counties. The Victorian colony failed to survive but left behind a tourist attraction later added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Patterson said the state funding will be used for new roofing, windows and paint at Uffington House. Patterson said the original library, school house and Thomas Hughes home still stand today.

Rugby’s award Friday part of $8.7 million awarded by the state.
