To stay on track with your fitness goals this year, a local expert said focus on your behavior and approach.
White County YMCA Fitness and Wellness Director Nina Weston said that everything comes down to you. Weston said that making an appointment with yourself, just as you would with a doctor, will keep you on the right path. Weston said that remembering to walk rather than run is important, as the process is a marathon, not a sprint.
“It’s not always about what the scale says, it’s about what your body says, how you feel,” Weston said. “Sometimes you may shrink pant sizes and not lose that many pounds. You know, it’s your body composition changing and then you’re also improving your heart health.”
Weston said that she valued an accountability partner and the importance of support that person brings to the table. Weston said having an accountability partner helps maintain your schedule and will hold you accountable. Weston also said this way, you can start to change your behavior and ask yourself, if that person was not here, would I be doing this.
“Once you get that, you got to go in and do this for yourself, and that will become a part of your lifestyle,” Weston said. “You got to make it part of your lifestyle, even when life is busy.”
Weston said that some people become too motivated when starting the gym and over train. Weston said that muscles in the body need to recover, not overwork. She said working out too much will lead to weight gain rather than weight loss.
“Sometimes we gotta start out with baby steps,” Weston said. “We start walking and usually it takes a couple weeks for your energy levels to improve so once those entry levels improve, then you can increase the activity that your doing.”
Weston said that the White County YMCA offers classes with personal trainers to ensure the balance of working out. She also said that the facility provides a walking trail for relaxation and a variety of cardio equipment.
