Spencer Veteran Housing Project Delayed

Work continues on four veteran transitional housing units in Spencer, but the completion date has been delayed.

American Legion Post 207 Commander Hansel Moore said the housing units are being built by volunteers in their spare time. Moore said the major delays for the units are weather and funding.

“We can’t go into debt,” Moore said. “So we continue to purchase items that we need as we have the money, but we will see once we get the electric in how much faster we can continue to move.”

Moore said they have the services lined up for the units that will further assist the veterans with things like transportation. Moore said he hopes to have all four units completed by November.

“Without volunteers, there is no project,” Moore said. “They have been instrumental in the number of people in the community that have helped us. We’ve had some outstanding people step forward at our breakfast and make some donations.”

Moore said the project is close to being finished but he will continue to ask for help.

“Until we actually cross that finish line we are still going to be able to use help,” Moore said. “We really don’t say no to anybody, so  if there is somebody who is willing to come and help or provide some financial assistance that would be great.”

Once the units are completed the American Legion will take applications and select four veterans to fill the four units. Moore said the application process will start around September. Moore said they will take the four veterans who are in the most need of help.

“The sad part is it’s not going to take long to have more than four applications,” Moore said. “That’s based on like I said our interaction with people across the state. There are a lot of veterans out there who are in need of housing for whatever reason. filling the units is not going to be an issue.”
