A Spencer utility worker who died after a trench collapsed Tuesday has been identified.
Spencer city officials released a statement Wednesday that Mickey Fisher passed away while responding to a water leak on Phifer Mine Road.
The trench then collapsed on top of Fisher while he was working. Putnam County and Chattanooga rescue squads were called to the scene to assist in finding Fisher.
“Rescue attempts were made for several hours, but it is with deep sorrow to share that all attempts to save Fisher were unsuccessful,” Spencer city officials wrote. “We extend our sincere condolences to the family, friends, and co-workers. They are in our thoughts and prayers.”
The statement indicates funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.
The Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has opened an investigation into the incident.
