The state awarded the City of Spencer some $2.87 million in state ARP funding Wednesday to help improve the city’s water quality.
According to state officials, Spencer will use the money along with ARP money from Van Buren County and other grant funding to fix outdated infrastructure and stop water loss. The project will ultimately lead to a new water source for the community. Part of the money will be used for a booster station, the addition of a sedimentation basin and improvements to the water distribution system.
State officials announced the grant as part of $203 million in money being used to improve water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure in some 43 entities statewide.
Spencer has struggled with water quality issues for several years. The state has urged the city to merge its facilities with a Warren County utility or sell it outright. However, Spencer officials want to try to fix the issues.
“These grants will play a major role in ensuring cities and towns have access to infrastructure solutions that will enable them to continue thriving so Tennessee remains a preferred destination for both businesses and families,” House Speaker Cameron Sexton said.
