Spencer Set To Establish Tourism Council

Spencer will establish an Economic Development and Tourism Council to serve as an advisor on economic and tourism matters.

The new council will have 13 members consisting of businesses and entities that already work with economic development for the city. Mayor Alisa Farmer said tourism is an industry the city has not yet explored.

“I will tell you all that this is a great need in our area to tap into trying to establish more focus on tourism,” Farmer said. “We have right at two million people who visit Fall Creek Falls alone and that’s not counting all the other things that they visit.”

The new council will be required to hold public meetings with a public notice at least six times a year. Farmer said the council will work together to create a tourism website soon. Farmer said the new council will play a huge role in growing tourism and creating economic opportunities for the city.

“I think this will be a positive impact for us,” Farmer said. “This will go along with the tourism grant the city has already applied for and received.”

The city received a tourism grant worth a sum of $95,000 to implement a full-time position to help with tourism promotion. Farmer said other surrounding counties already have a similar type of council.

“The counties that have already established these councils and committees within the last two to three years have had really good success in this,” Farmer said.
