Spencer Raises Planning Commission Fees

Spencer raising planning commission fees as the cost of advertising keeps increasing.

Spencer Mayor Alisa Farmer said the planning commission suggested the fee increase as the city has to advertise the meetings to the public. The planning commission fee will increase from $60 to $100 per proposal. Farmer said this is the second year in a row the city is raising the fee as last year the fee increased from $15 to $60.

“We upped that to $60 thinking that would cover the cost of advertising,” Farmer said. “As of right now, the advertising cost is running anywhere from $80-$90. Every time we advertise it goes up even further.”

Farmer said the city has been covering the difference for the advertising costs. Farmer said the increased fee will keep the city from having to spend additional money on advertising.

“That’s a cost on the city that the city can’t continue doing,” Farmer said. “It’s not because of us that this is happening it’s a request from the property owner.”

Property owners can file a proposition to the planning commission if the owner wants to do something with a property that goes against codes or zoning regulations. Farmer said those meetings are public hearings and must be advertised to the public.
