The city of Spencer is working towards improving its water operations through a federal grant.
The roughly $600,000 grant will help improve clean water operations. Mayor Mickey Robinson said a plan will be made to address aging infrastructure.
“The goal for Spencer is to develop better standards of operation for water supply, water treatment and distribution,” Robinson said. “Additionally, Spencer will develop models of processes.”
The city of Spencer held a public hearing to provide more information about the grant Monday night. Robinson said Spencer is one of only two recipients of the grant. The city is partnering on the project with the University of Memphis and James C. Haily & Company. Robinson said the university is currently testing the water for disinfection and byproduct issues.
“This grant is for future planning and development of operation procedures, no tangible access may be purchased and it cannot be used for operation and maintenance expenses.”
James C. Haily & Company will assist with water source, treatment, operation, supply and distribution system issues. Robinson said the city has until September of 2021 to complete creating new operations.
The Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation Act (WIIN) Grant helps with planning, design, and technical assistance in preparation for improvements to the existing water treatment plant and distribution system, as well as addressing long-term water supplies to improve the city’s ability to comply with the Safe Drinking Water Act.
