The Spencer City Council amended an ordinance for a planned water and sewer rate increase Thursday.
The increase implemented in February, 2023 to gradually increase rates every six months until the city’s utilities were no longer experiencing financial stress. With the change in utility leadership, Spencer Mayor Alisa Farmer said the state suggested the change.
“We had one more rate change that would be in effect in August and they are giving us permission to cancel that rate change but that will require the board’s vote on that because it is an ordinance,” Farmer said.
Farmer said she believes the residents in Spencer will be relieved with the cancellation of the increase. The proposal was going to be a $3.75 increase for water meters and a $4 flat rate increase for sewer meters with a 13-cent increase per 100 gallons.
“I was present at this meeting only we were doing it virtually,” Farmer said. “It turned out to be a very lengthy meeting, we are so very thankful, but it was okayed by the board.”
