A new splash pad in Sparta closer to a reality after the board of Aldermen approved some $2.3 million for the project in its new budget.
Mayor Jerry Lowery said when he was running for mayor, an local amenity was one of the most significant asks from constituents. He said a splash pad was also identified as the number one want in White County’s Parks and Recreation survey conducted last year.
“And we are going to start the process and it’ll be slow at first, but we’re going to start the process of having a splash pad,” Lowery said.”And I think it’s going to be an awesome thing for the community and I’m excited to be a part of it.”
Lowery said the splash pad will be located behind the YMCA where the little league parks are currently located. He said most games are played at a field outside the city limits, so the field has limited use and is vacant most of the time.
Lowery said they will now put out a request for qualifications for architects to start the design process. He said they will need to get the land survey and decide the layout for the splash pad.
“And then plan out what fits there, look at the various components and things that need to be placed there,” Lowery said. “Then they’ll give a 3-D of it, if you will, and then also get the cost estimates, and then they’ll put all of these technical specs and things like that, then we’ll have to put that out to bid for companies to come in and start het process of building.”
Lowery said he would love to have the facility open within a year. He said while that might not be guaranteed, they officially have the money to spend on the project started July 1st.
