Sparta Signs Agreement With Marines

The U.S. Marine Corps may soon conduct a training exercise in Sparta.

Sparta’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved a Memorandum Of Understanding between the Marines and the Sparta Police Department.

Al Parker addressed the board on behalf of the Marines.

“Basically this MOU is like a permission slip, you give me permission to come into your town, I have a couple sites already on our slate, but we have put the talks in postponement mode, IMI Concrete plant is one of our future sites we want to do,” Parker said.

Parker said the agreement is good for three years and it’s flexible.

“Anytime in between that time frame something comes up and you don’t want to participate that’s all it is is a phone call and we remove it, we thank you for your service and move on to the next one,” Parker said.

Sparta officials will be briefed 60 and 30 days before any exercise. They’ll also get notices 48 hours, 24 hours and 4 hours before the training. The exercises use paint balls instead of live ammunition and are conducted overnight.
