Sparta Replacing Water Lines Before Fall Paving Begins

Sparta Public Works finishing up some water line replacements on three streets preparing for fall paving.

Director Dillard Quick said work on Turntable Road and Highland Drive has been completed.

“The lines are 50 years old, 60 years old and some of the streets we’re going in once a month, maybe every two months and digging a hole and it is just tearing our roads completely up,” Quick said. “So, the best thing to do is just replace the line, repave that street and then we’re done.”

Quick said the city will address water lines at Crosslin Street next. Quick said the department is waiting for the engineering plans for a new six inch pipe with new fire hydrants.

“Highland Drive was probably 35o feet which is a small street,” Quick said. “Turntable was about 600 feet and Crosslin Street is about 900 feet of water line.”

Quick said the water line replacements go hand and hand with the city’s goal to eventually repave all streets. Quick said the in-house work has gone smoothly with the recent good weather.

‘We’re actually doing quite well,” Quick said. “We’ve got a lot of work going on. The guys are going out each morning. We’re not having to wait for the weather to clear up or anything.”
