Sparta in the design stage of replacing two water pumps at its Story Mountain station.
Public Works Director Dillard Quick said the city has $115,000 budgeted to upgrade equipment that serves about 20 homes.
“These pumps are probably 30 to 35-years-old, and it’s the only pumps that supply the water for Story Mountain,” Quick said. “The shafts are worn and warped and at this point, it just warrants getting two new pumps to put in.”
Quick said the goal is to have the equipment installed this summer as engineers prepare the project for bid. Quick said the city would alternate installation so that at least one pump constantly runs so services are not disrupted.
Quick said the city has completed several temporary fixes over the years, but it was finally time for a full replacement. Quick said the project is a part of natural depreciation when operating a water system.
