Sparta Reorganizes Electric Department

Sparta’s Board of Mayor and Alderman approved a plan to reorganize the city’s electric department at its regular meeting Thursday.

Mayor Jeff Young:

“So what I think this is going to do is streamline our entire electric department, put everything equal with the electric department under the umbrella of city hall as it is anyway,” Young said.

The move made several personnel changes, including eliminating the empty director’s position.

“It would create a superintendent’s position, it would save some money and put a new position in there as an apprentice to protect us in the future and it will also free up some money for us to compensate our linemen to attract new linemen,” Young said.

Sparta has attempted to hire new linemen for months. Applicants have told city officials the job didn’t pay enough.

The reorganization plan was ultimately approved unanimously.
