Sparta Public Works Department Working On Allen Drive In July

Sparta’s Public Works Department will continue its rehab of Allen Drive next month.

Director Dillard Quick said work needs to be done beneath the road before the paving of the street can begin.

“The drain tile coming from the school where the old Food Lion used to be over to cross the road is what’s being rehabbed,” Quick said. “It’s a drain tile, it’s about 200 feet long, and we’re going to replace that tile because that’s one of the things in the road that needs to be replaced before you pave the street.”

Quick said part of the road had been repaved a few years ago, and after the drain tile is replaced they can begin the next phase of repaving. He said most of the work for this phase of the project has already been finished.

“We’ve done the water line switchovers, the sewer lines have been checked, it’s been cambered,” Quick said. “The only thing that’s lacking now is the storm drain that goes across the street, and that is the last thing to be performed before we pave that street next year.”

Quick said the work will be done over the month of July, and then the road will be added to next year’s paving list.

“We are going to start just as soon as the new fiscal year starts,” Quick said. “It should take us about two weeks to cut the road, tear the old pipe out, lay the new pipe, and put down rock and binder in its place. And then the road will be paved next year.”

Quick said the repaving will be on the intersection of Allen Drive and Breeding Drive.
