A career spanning over 56 years of caring for patients in White County hospitals.
OR Nurse Bettie Davis can remember the day she began her lifelong career.
“I started out March the 25th of ’65 as a nurse tech,” Davis said. “And then I went to LPN school and graduated in ’68, and then I’ve been working in White County hospitals all my life.
Davis said that before the OR director invited her to come work, she had never liked hospitals. She said that it’s the desire to help people and make the community better that has kept her going for the past five decades. She said that she’s loved every second of her work.
“They all are precious to me,” Davis said. “Especially when we do labor and delivery. I love delivering babies, but now I don’t miss it because I don’t have to be up late at night.”
But her tenure has not been without hard times as well.
“When you’re in a delivery everything goes wrong with a baby,” Davis said. “That is your worst nightmare right there. And you remember each one of them too, you don’t ever forget them.”
Davis said that for those who want to follow in her footsteps, hard work will bring success.
“Just be dedicated to your work and also just treat somebody like you want to be treated,” Davis said. “You’ll strive to do better if you do that.”
