Sparta Mayor Jerry Lowery has reappointed the city’s Parks and Recreation Board in an effort to reactivate the body.
Lowery said the board of the previous administration stopped meeting. Lowery said he wanted to reform the body to start planning for possible projects.
“We’ve got a lot in store for Sparta in the next three years under my administration,” Lowery said. “One of my goals and visions is to upgrade some playground equipment and we’re looking at a splash pad.”
Lowery said initial efforts will be focused on South Carter Street Park. Lowery said the city is in the process of designing the splash pad with engineers. Lowery said he wants the board to explore grant opportunities to fulfill his plans.
“We needed that board to be active to help plan that,” Lowery said. “I needed to delegate so we’ve got some good members across the community that can guide us on that. You’ll be hearing more about that later on as we present our vision.”
Lowery said he would also like to connect existing trails and create self-guided hikes. The new board members include Tara Heady, Daniel Marcum, Megan Choate, Alderman Brian Jones and County Commissioner Kyle Goff.
“I’m excited about it, and I think the city of Sparta and residents of White County will all benefit from this,” Lowery said. “Everybody needs places to work, live and we need places to play.”
