Sparta Mayor Jeff Young has proposed a some $30,000 landscaping project for the off-ramps in the city.
Young said he wants to focus on the intersections of Highway 70 and 111 as well as Spring Street and 111.
“Some of those areas that we’re talking about are areas we are trying to fix up and make more inviting to the tourists when they pass by and make it more appealing for the people that live in Sparta,” Young said.
So far, Young has presented the Board of Aldermen with examples that are similar to the idea. Young said he proposes creating raised beds lined with flowering trees at the exit ramps.
“I notice when I go down to some of the areas in Nashville like the Cool Spring or Franklin area they have those median areas landscaped,” Young said. “It looks amazing as far as the ascetics go. I just think that Sparta is wide open to doing the same thing.”
If the board decides to move forward, Young said the next step would be funding. Young said he has been working with the city’s tree board throughout the process.
“The tree board we have put them back in place,” Young said. “They sort of kind of dissolved. There wasn’t a lot happening with that board over the past year or so, but we got that board back in check now. I think they can come up with some great ideas.”
Young said the landscaping would also compliment the newly completed gateway monuments.
