The city of Sparta is exploring ideas for the next round of Tourism Enhancement Grants.
At Sparta’s Board of Alderman meeting Thursday, City Administrator Brad Hennessee said applications for next year’s tourism grant are now out. Sparta received their last check for the kayak launch dock on the Calfkiller River for last year’s grant this week.
“I had asked the department heads in a staff meeting yesterday to be brain storming for ideas on what the next project to be,” Hennessee said. “I would like the board to do the same thing.”
Public Works Director Dillard Quick suggested building a new pavilion on North Carter and 12 by 12 storm shelters on the city walking trials. Fire Chief Kirk Young said a new boat dock at North Carter would be a good option as well. Applications for the tourism grant are due by July 15th.
The kayak launch dock project cost $47,466 with the tourism grant paying $42,000. The dock provides better kayak access to the Calfkiller River. A new restroom facility was also constructed near the new pavilion included with the grant.
“I would like to compliment the public works department on that,” Hennessee said. “Everybody I have talked to along the way getting reimbursements from the Upper Cumberland Development District has complimented Sparta on not having the grant very long and already having this complete.”
