Sparta Board of Aldermen approved the rezoning on first reading of two parcels on Roosevelt Street Thursday night.
Building Inspector Mike O’Neal said the lots would be rezoned Commercial D from manufacturing/industrial.
“In order to sell that for other things, it needs to be a C-D property,” O’Neal said. “It would have to be rezoned. The M-1 is for industrial use only. This will open the door for business food establishments. It would be a good improvement there.”
O’Neal said signage is currently erected on the property to notify adjacent property owners of the rezoning. The Planning Commission has already approved the rezoning and a public hearing will be the next step on the rezoning.
Council also approved the replacement of a 15-ton HVAC unit at the Sparta YMCA. City officials said this will be the final piece in replacing all the units at the center. ARP money will be used to make the upgrade.
A new audit contract also approved by the council.
