Sparta could soon have new small home rental spaces on North Church Street designed for tourists.
The Board of Alderman Thursday approved a zoning change for roughly two acres to allow multiple dwellings on one parcel. Mayor Jeff Young said the homes will be marketed to visitors.
“What the intention is behind that property is they want to build smaller multiple homes instead of one single family dwelling on a parcel,” Young said. “They want to put multiple homes on one parcel, so they can rent them out to people to come visit and tour Sparta and White County.”
The parcels were zoned Residential-A, which allows for a single-family dwelling. The Thursday vote changed the zoning to Residential-B, allowing multiple homes on one plot. A public hearing before the vote generated no concerns.
Young said rental spaces like this are becoming more common in the community.
“Actually, just on the square we had some investors buy a parcel over here and split one space into four units,” Young said. “Just south of the city hall.”
Developers have no time frame for the development.
