Sparta Aldermen Vote To Add GPS Tracking, Monitoring To City Vehicles

The Sparta Aldermen voted Thursday night to approve the purchase and usage of GPS trackers on city vehicles.

The Aldermen unanimously approved the $17,154 purchase. City Administrator Tonya Tindle said the city has already got to see a prototype of how the system will work.

“Department heads will monitor their own department,” Tindle said. “It’s fleet management as much as it is a GPS. It will keep up with when they need their oil changed, when their tires need to be rotated, everything, and there’ll be one probably central location.”

Tindle said a safety grant will pay $4,500 of the cost of the Samsara units. She said department heads will be able to download an app to track and gather all the information they want.

“We can set it up for as much as we want,” Tindle said. “We can set alerts. We can have it track all kinds of stuff. It’s good for our insurance.”

The Samsara GPS will cost $17,034 every year the city uses it. The city signed a 36-month contract.

In other business, the board appointed Angie Sailors to the Housing Board and Kyle Goff to the Parks And Recreation Board. The board approved the police department to hire a new officer and sell an abandoned car.
