Smithville’s New Police Department Building Nearly Complete

Smithville anticipates the city’s new Police Department Building to be completed in mid-August.

Mayor Josh Miller said police officers will greatly benefit from the much needed space.

“They have about 800 square feet to work in right now, and they are about to move in to a 12,000 square foot facility,” Miller said. “A lot safer and a lot more protection for them.”

Miller said the $2.5 million building is located beside City Hall on Main Street. Miller said the goal to move in department staff by September.

“The outside is almost complete, we’re still waiting on the interior to be completed,” Miller said. “We’re hoping in the next four to five weeks that the whole building will be complete.”

Miller said the land used for the project was donated to the city a few years ago. Miller said officers will have a larger front desk area, break rooms and a new sally port to transfer inmates.

“The community, when they go into the police department they will go into the foyer area, but they will not be able to go back into the building,” Miller said. “It will be a lot safer.”

The building also includes three holding cells, an armory, conference and training rooms and multiple offices.
