Smithville preparing to start a year-long project to rehabilitate a portion of its sewer systems.
Engineering Services Manager Daniel Tribble said they are replacing a series of cross county sewer lines which are lines that follow natural topography such as ditches and creeks. Tribble said the work is scheduled to start in late October or early November.
“It should reduce the amount of inflow and infiltration which lessens the amount of wastewater the city has to treat at its plant,” Tribble said. “And ultimately less flow to treat means less expensive operating costs for the city.”
Tribble said the project will cost some $2.7 million with about $1 million paid by the city and the rest coming from various grants. Tribble said there should be no disruptions to sewer services for anyone in the city while the work is in progress.
“There will be very minimal traffic impacts where there are road crossings,” Tribble said. “And the contractor will have temporary facilities erected to, you know, make sure that folks are driving around those. I don’t expect there to be really a whole lot of road closures, things like that.”
Tribble said the project came about through an ARP grant Smithville received because a large percentage of its water lines are over fifty years old.
“There’s also a Community Development Block Grant that’s assisting with the project,” Tribble said. “The remaining amount would be supplied by the city using their in-house water and sewer funds.”
