Smithville residents have a chance to beat the heat this summer with the city pool opening Friday.
Pool Manager Jeania Cawthorn said there will be options for all ages and needs this year at the Smithville Golf Course and Pool. She said the pool was open last year but turnout was low.
“It was a crazy summer last year,” Cawthorn said. “We were open and might have seen probably 10 people a day with the fear of the COVID. This summer my phone is blowing up. So I know that there’s going to be lots of swimmers out here and lots of people enjoying this pool.”
Cawthorn said lap swimming and exercise classes have returned for seniors after a year off for COVID precautions. She said an hour of quiet time from 9:00 AM-10:00 AM at the pool is being offered for residents with special needs.
Entry into the Smithville Pool is $2 and will be open Monday through Saturday from 11:00 AM-5:00 PM and Sunday from 1:00 PM-5:00 PM.
“We’ll start our exercise classes, we’re going to do those on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays,” Cawthorn said. “The first 30 minutes is going to be gentle joints, really good for arthritis. The second part of it will be more of a fast paced exercise.”
She said exercise classes are from 10:00 AM-11:00 AM and cost $1. Cawthorn said the pool will be open for regular hours on Memorial Day.
