Smithville Making Repairs To Aging Green Brook Park

Smithville’s Green Brook Park will receive about $45,000 worth of improvements this fall.

The Board of Aldermen approved the bid for work focusing on wooden playground equipment. Mayor Josh Miller said it was installed more than 20 years ago.

“It’s just time for us to make some necessary repairs,” Miller said. “Of course the big repair is just refurbishing what we already have. It is good equipment. It just needs some attention.”

Miller said $48,000 was budgeted for the project after the city failed on several grant applications. Bench and infrastructure improvements also included in the contract of work.

“We’ve applied for several grants to improve the park, but we have not been successful in getting any grants,”  Miller said.

Miller said the park remains in high use and will bring one of the city’s main public recreation areas back to standard.

“It’s used all the time constantly,” Miller said. “If you want to reserve a shelter, it stays pretty booked about every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It is very much used.”

Miller said the timing of the start of work should be at, “The end of quarter three or the start of quarter four that’s what I was told yesterday,” Miller said. “Hopefully by sometime in the fall we will start seeing the work be done. That’s probably good timing.”
