Smith County Schools will be closed during the August 21st total solar eclipse.
The school system will be using one of it’s 13 built in weather days to account for the missed school day.
Director of Schools Barry Smith said he made the call to close schools after consulting with the Tennessee Department of Safety, Homeland Security, and Tennessee Highway Patrol.
He said the decision was made due to potential safety issues among students and the anticipation of increased traffic on roadways throughout the day.
