Show Support For Domestic Violence Survivors On Purple Thursday

Purple Thursday celebrated to raise awareness of domestic violence and to show support for survivors.

Upper Cumberland Family Justice Center Director Amy Stockwell said the day serves as a special reminder during Domestic Violence Awareness Month that domestic violence can happen to anyone. She said there is a certain stigma that brings feelings of shame to some survivors.

“There’s really no reason for them to feel that way it happens across all socioeconomic levels, it doesn’t matter your race or ethnicity,” Stockwell said. “One in four women will be a victim of domestic violence in their lifetime and I think it’s probably a lot more prevalent than that.”

Stockwell said the key to breaking the cycle of domestic violence is to bring awareness. She said it is crucial for survivors to know they have that support, and days like Purple Thursday can highlight that.

Stockwell said the Upper Cumberland Family Justice Center also provides support to survivors by helping to connect them with resources.
