The Cookeville Putnam County Animal Shelter offering discounted adoption fees for cats till the end of the week as the shelter celebrates Catober.
Animal Shelter Director Jennifer Tracy said the shelter is discounting adoption fees for cats of all ages. Tracy said cats breed during the warmer months and the shelter tends to receive a lot of stray cats as fall begins.
“We had a bunch of kittens come to our adoptable age all at the same time,” Tracy said. “So we are just trying to get them on out of here and into homes. Kitten season is winding down but we still probably have another month of it.”
Tracy said recently cats are being adopted more than dogs even without the discount. Tracy said cats are wonderful companions and as funny as cats are who knows you might adopt the next social media star.
“Largely I think it is because they are easier,” Tracy said. “They are more self-sufficient. They amuse themselves all you have to do is give them a treat and a litter box. They tend to be more affordable too. It’s not expensive to keep a cat in a lot of ways.”
Tracy said the shelter has seen an uptick in cat adoptions since offering discounts. Cats five months or younger are $95 each or two for $125. Five months to 4 years are $50 and five years or older are $20.
“It’s been a pretty good turnout so far I hope to see some more moving,” Tracy said. “We’ve adopted about 25 since the promotion has started.”
