Sen. Bailey Working On Bill To Protect Consumer Information From Genetic Testing Companies

Senator Paul Bailey working on a bill that will protect consumers from having their information sold by genetic testing companies.

Bailey said Senate Bill 1295 is co-sponsored by Representative Sabi Kumar. Bailey said as presented, the bill requires a direct-to-consumer genetic testing company to follow certain protocols.

“Information cannot be sold or transferred or given over to another company without the written consent of the owner of that DNA material,” Bailey said. “We just felt like that is something consumers definitely need to be aware of.”

Bailey said the bill has passed the senate and is currently sitting in the calendar committee.

“Which basically means we’re waiting for it to go to the Senate floor,” Bailey said. “The House has got another committee or two to move through, they’re a little bit slower pace than the Senate is.”

Bailey said he does not foresee any roadblocks to this bill becoming law.
