Security Upgrades Coming To Jackson Co. School Entrances

Jackson County Schools will be improving security at each of its schools by constructing new secure entrances.

The project will be partially funded from a reoccurring state safety grant. Director of Schools Kristy Brown said the upgrades will come in phases due to limited funds.

“We want to secure the front entrances of our schools,” Brown said. “We do a safety threat assessment annually and that is one of the things that has come up. This will provide some funds to offset that project.

Brown said the upgrades will be similar to other school system entrances with a vestibules leading to the front office. An architect is currently creating a proposal for the board of education on which  school to upgrade first.

“Anytime there is a structural change to a building, we want to get an architect involved and make sure we are keeping the integrity of the building,” Brown said. “We look forward to getting a plan together.”

The grant is worth $39,000. A time frame for the project will be known once the architect completes the project proposal.
