The search for a new director of schools will begin in Cumberland County this week.
The board of education voted last week to begin advertising the position on Wednesday. 6th District board member Tom Netherton said the search should not go nationwide.
“We need to stay in state where people understand our school system,” Netherton said. “I do think we need to make people who are either current or previous employees of the Cumberland County School System our first priority because they will be able to understand it best.”
The school system will accept applications until March 25. Chairman Teresa Boston said the board will begin reviewing each resume and scheduling interviews by the first week of April.
“I think what we do, is we publicize it throughout the state,” Boston said. “Once we get those (applications) in, then we look at locals and have a work session to interview those as a board. If we cannot come to an agreement or need to look further, then we can go with the resumes that we have received outside of Cumberland County.”
The contract for current Director of Schools Janet Graham expires in June. The board hopes to find a replacement before that contract expires.
