Scarecrows In Costume For Fentress Halloween Contest

Fentress County ready with its long-standing annual County-wide Scarecrow Contest.

Residents encouraged to display their scarecrows in publicly accessible areas they own such as businesses, office spaces, or fields. Fentress County Chamber of Commerce Director of Tourism and Leadership Seth Vaughn said citizens look forward to the contest.

“It brings more fall appeal to our downtown area specifically,” Vaughn said. “That’s where a large amount of scarecrow participants are based out of. In years past the scarecrow contest was only limited to people in the downtown district but we since have expanded that.”

Vaughn said that the contest is free to enter and boasts grand prizes for the top three placeholders at the contest’s end. For bonus points, citizens can elect to dress their scarecrow appropriately resembling an easily recognizable Fentress County public figure.

“We just thought it would be something to switch up the contest a little bit,” Vaughn said. “To change it up just to make it a little more fun and interactive.”

All scarecrows must be displayed by October 20th and remain up until the end of business on October 31st.

“I was just in a local business not too long ago and they had made their mark ‘Where’s all the scarecrows at?’” Vaughn said. “Because we hadn’t started the scarecrow contest yet so they really do enjoy the contest.”

Vaughn said scarecrows for the contest cannot be displayed at private residencies. Vaughn said the chamber does not want people alarmed at a group of people approaching their home.
