Spoofing the Cookeville Police phone number and telling a caller you represent the Internal Revenue Service.
It’s certainly the work of a confident scammer, a scammer that struck in Cookeville Friday.
“We had a citizen come in and report that they had actually given their credit card number to a person claiming to be from the IRS but using our phone number,” Cookeville Police Spokesman Bobby Anderson said.
Anderson said police get lots of complaints about spoofing phone numbers, where a scammer shows up on caller ID with a legitimate number.
“The best thing to remember is just never give out any information over the phone,” Anderson said. “If it’s the IRS or the police department, no matter what the department is, they shouldn’t be asking for money over the phone.”
Should you receive a scam call or believe you have been a victim, Anderson said you can call Cookeville Police at 526-2125.
Earlier this week, a Crossville resident received a scam call and purchased $1,900 in I-Tune gift cards before realizing the mistake.
