Safe Haven Puppy Sanctuary Sees Overflow Of Rescues

The Safe Haven Puppy Sanctuary continues to see an overflow of unwanted puppies.

Sanctuary Treasurer Janet Gregg said they rescued over 600 puppies last year.

“There used to be a puppy season in the spring or summer when we would have so many calls for puppies,” Gregg said. “But now it’s just become year round, and there’s so many litters of unwanted puppies day after day after day. This year we’re probably approaching the 100 mark [of rescues]. It’s just overwhelming.”

The organization is foster based and partners with rescue groups in Pennsylvania and New York.  Gregg said the sanctuary has been in operation since 2014.

Gregg said the sanctuary began because puppies need extra time and care that not all shelters can provide. She adds the best way to reduce puppy numbers is to fix your pets.

“We would love to be put out of the rescue business if people would spay and neuter their pets. It’s such a simple procedure, there’s low cost options,” Gregg said. “That is the main reason why we get flooded with so many unwanted puppies. There’s just too many dogs that don’t get spayed and neutered and run loose and causes this overabundance of puppies in the area.”
