Rules To Follow With Political Signs

Flowers aren’t the only thing popping up right now…political signs have also made an appearance across the area.

The city of Cookeville allows political signs in all zoning districts, but signs must be on private property with consent of the owner.

Jeff Litrell directs the Cookeville Codes Department.

“Use some common sense, even if it’s on private property,” Ltitrell said. “If it’s on a corner lot, make sure you aren’t blocking the visibility for people pulling on to a road or pulling out from a neighbors driveway.”

Political signs can’t be any larger than 32 square feet in Cookeville and they have to be specific to an election.

Signs must be removed within 14 days after the completion of the election or a $50 per day fine could be enforced.

“The only issues we might have would be people that don’t know the rules,” Litrell said. “They might set them out on the right-of-way or put them on a utility pole.”
